Abstract The use of "integrated safety" motion controllers on numerically-controlled machines and in machining centres allows an improvement in operator safety. However, they do not prevent all hazards, and can sometimes cause new ones. These devices being relatively recent, INRS decided to examine their ability to ensure the safety of operators in conformity with the claims of the manufacturer. This article sets out the concept of integrated safety motion controllers and examines the integration of this specific device within a control circuit. Contents: problems encountered in high-speed machining; the Sinumerik® integrated safety motion controller of the Siemens company; schematic diagram; architecture of this motion controller; safety function management; concept of integrated safety; review of this innovative concept. A box includes key definitions and terminology.
