Abstract The purpose of this study is to highlight the advantages of safety interventions in medium-sized and large Peruvian mines. The study is divided into four parts: statistics of accidents having occurred between 1994 and 1998, by enterprise and cause; defining and identifying the elements that need to be taken into account when calculating the costs of an accident; calculation of the fixed and variable costs for each type of accident and for the mining sector as a whole; analysis of the reversal of the trend achieved thanks to the implementation of safety programmes, compared to the costs of accidents in the absence of such programmes.
