Abstract The objective of this study was to address the issue of the role of safety posters in the promotion of occupational safety and health. Following some general comments on images and posters, the main stages in the life cycle of posters are discussed, including initial concept, design, evaluation, distribution, use, impact and new expectations. Findings drawn from literature or from interviews with users are competed with observations and analyses. Various types of evaluation tools applicable to safety posters are also mentioned.
