Abstract The objective of this study was to analyse how the duration of on-board periods affect the quality of life of seafarers in the merchant navy and among tuna fishermen in the Indian Ocean. 56 seafarers participated in the study and were evaluated three times within a six-month period using the "PECVEC" (profile of the quality of life of chronic patients) questionnaire. The comparison of the average results of the three evaluations showed significant differences and a deterioration of the quality of life when the subjects were on board on permanent basis. A longer period on board was associated with a more pronounced worsening of the quality of life.
