Abstract This study of the activities of oil industry workers in Brazil is based on approximately 50 interviews of workers. It analyses the tasks during the various phases from exploration to distribution, through production, refining, transport and storage. Although the tasks are very diverse, the activities of oil industry workers present the following common traits: work with dangerous substances (flammable, explosive or toxic); treatment of large quantities of products; continuous work; processes carried out in closed systems consisting of equipment and piping; indirect process control; network structure of various parts of the system. It is a complex industry, presenting various hazards and requiring high levels of competence and responsibility.
