Abstract The last few years have witnessed the increasing importance of behaviour-based safety within the framework of safety management systems. This article defines the basic principles for the implementation of a safety management system that takes human behaviour into account: focusing on behaviour; observing and quantifying the different types of behaviour; clearly defining behaviour; making use of the potential consequences of behaviour (feedback and reinforcement); managing the behaviour (safety training and definition of objectives); encouraging participation; maintaining a high standard of professional ethics; designing a strategy and adhering to the model defined.
