Abstract Interventional radiological measures can lead to high radiation exposures for medical staff. In order to determine radiation exposure to staff and patients, 52 measurements were made at a cardiac catheterization laboratory with a new dosimetry system. Besides the measurement of body dose behind the lead apron, measures of radiation were performed in front of the lead apron and at the physician's wrist. The patient's dose was also estimated. From the mean doses, the radiation dose per year for a physician performing 1000 interventions was determined to be 1.9mSv/year which is below the new limit of 20mSv/year. The results for vascular brachytherapy did not show significantly higher exposures.
