Abstract Aimed at persons responsible for occupational hygiene within enterprises, this practical information sheet presents the basic principles for the design of acoustic enclosures, together with the rules that should be followed during design. The three basic principles are human protection (lowering noise levels at the place of work), assessment of the impact of the enclosure on the work environment and working methods, and the early involvement of the various persons concerned by the acoustic enclosure project. Technical rules that should be followed during design include the evaluation of constraints, machine insulation, noise absorption within the enclosure, limitation of leaks, treatment of openings and the decoupling of the enclosure. Once in place, the effectiveness of the enclosure needs to be checked.
