Abstract Several studies show that variations in the 0.1Hz component of the pulse rate may be a good indicator of mental strain, while others cast doubt on its validity. In this thesis aimed at determining the sensitivity and diagnostic validity of the 0.1Hz component of the pulse rate for measuring mental strain, laboratory studies were conducted in which the type and level of mental stress were varied according to the perceived level of performance and difficulty of the task. Results show that this component should not be used for the evaluation of mental strain.
