Abstract An analysis of past incidents shows that effective safety management on board ships enables action to minimize risk. This report studies the importance of the subjective aspects of effective safety management, and in particular the stress on the master of the ship and on human behaviour in general during the various phases of an emergency. A computer-assisted method for training in human behaviour during emergencies has been developed. An emotion-management programme and an exercise designed to be integrated into the ship steering simulator were also developed and tested during a workshop attended by pilots. The training material in grouped together on a CD-ROM.
