Abstract In cross-sectional epidemiological surveys, subjects that are included in the sample are subjected to investigations that are limited in time, allowing research to focus on issues that are present at the time of the study. These cross-sectional studies can be either descriptive or analytical. Descriptive cross-sectional studies focus on the frequency and distribution of diseases and health indicators. They enable the creation, the description and in some cases the comparison of data on the state of health of populations. The objective of analytical cross-sectional surveys is to highlight the relationship between health effects and exposures. Cross-sectional studies may be carried out at repeated intervals, thereby giving a longitudinal view of the data. In these cases also, the approach can be either descriptive, for example in epidemiological surveillance studies, or less frequently, analytical.
