Title Motivating employees for the use of personal protective equipment
Bibliographic information Oct.-Dec. 2002, Vol.7 No.4, p.9-12.
Abstract Experience shows that many employees do not use personal protective equipment (PPE) for a variety of reasons. Coercing them into wearing PPEs is generally not effective. Consultations with labour organizations lead to identifying the main reasons for not wearing PPEs: lack of knowledge on the hazard; overconfidence; negligence; fear of ridicule when wearing PPEs; perception that use of PPEs slows down work, resulting in lower production and possible lower earnings; perception that PPEs are not necessary; discomfort. Each of these reasons are discussed briefly, and suggestions are made on motivating employees to use PPEs.
