Abstract The quality of reception is an important aspect of the functioning of a private surgical and medical clinic. Several ergonomic studies involving health care personnel have been carried out in hospital settings. However, little attention has been paid to the administration services that receive the patients, despite the fact that their conditions of work have a direct bearing on the relationship between the patients and the institution. This article describes an ergonomic study carried out in the medical secretariat of a private clinic. Work involved job studies and data collection, followed by the analysis of the data and of proposals submitted by the staff. It resulted in a new design involving a total change in the layout of the work premises.
