Abstract Report of a survey in a general hospital in Central Italy on the smoking habits of 2743 employees. The prevalence of smokers was quite high in both men (36.0%) and women (36.7%). The highest prevalence was found among ward orderlies (45.2%) and nurses (38.9%), the lowest among doctors (26.3%). The role of industrial physicians in combating smoking is emphasized.
