Abstract The aim of this report was to provide background information and a basis for discussions for delegates attending a tripartite meeting on the evolution of employment, working time and training in the mining industry held at the ILO in Geneva, Switzerland, 7-11 October 2002. The purpose of the meeting was to exchange views on the evolution of employment, working time and training in the mining industry, the social and labour implications of these developments for the parties concerned and the role of social dialogue in addressing them, and to adopt conclusions that include proposals for action by governments, by employers' and workers' organizations at the national level and by the ILO. Contents of this report: evolution of employment in the mining industry; evolution of working time; evolution of training; the AIDS/HIV issue; mining and sustainable development; summary and suggested points for discussion.
