Abstract This practical guide presents the following basic ergonomic principles: having everything at arm's reach; being constantly aware of shoulder height; understanding the relationship between effort and handle shape; finding the right position for each task; avoiding excessive repetition of movements; minimizing fatigue; minimizing direct pressure of the hands, arms and legs; ensuring that workstations and seats be adjustable and inclinable; ensuring sufficient space and ease of access to workplaces; ensuring comfortable working environments; ensuring clear signalling and using where possible standardized layouts of control elements; improving conditions of work. Practical examples illustrating each of the ergonomic principles are included.
