Abstract The objective of this study was to design a cash register for a large Tunisian retail chain, taking into account ergonomic and safety criteria. The project involved analysing the causes of absenteeism among the cashiers (all women), carrying out ergonomic analyses of their workplaces and working conditions and conducting a detailed study of the ergonomic risk factors due to the equipment and the workload. It was possible to make several recommendations with respect to ergonomic improvements (position of the bar code on the articles sold, workplace layout and design, work organization, lighting and the thermal environment).
