Abstract This article discusses the main aspects of hazards and public health risks due to chemicals associated with various municipal waste treatment methods. Following an overview of incineration, landfill and composting, the main metallic and organic pollutants are discussed, with emphasis on their possible toxicological implications and their concentrations in the various gaseous, liquid or solid waste streams of the waste treatment process. Basic notions of the accumulation of certain pollutants such as polychlorinated biphenyls, dioxins and cadmium in living organisms and in the food chain, as well as their toxicological consequences, are highlighted.
