Abstract Dinitro-ortho-cresol (DNOC) is used agriculturally as a larvicide, ovicide and insecticide as well as a potato haulm desiccant. It is also used as a polymerization inhibitor and as an intermediate in the chemical industry. Signs and symptoms of acute poisoning include restlessness, sensation of heat, flushed skin, sweating, thirst, deep and rapid respiration, tachycardia, severe increase of body temperature and cyanosis leading to collapse, coma and death. Effects are enhanced at high environmental temperature. Data from animal studies indicate that DNOC causes skin and eye irritation and skin sensitization.
