ILO joins collective commitment on migration governance and refugee response

The National Seminar on “UN Summit on Refugees and Migrants” at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel, Dhaka 3 September 2016, organised by the Government of Bangladesh, in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)

Representatives from various sectors pledge to address newer challenges emerging from large movements of people around the globe.

They were speaking at a National Seminar on “UN Summit on Refugees and Migrants” at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel, Dhaka 3 September 2016, organised by the Government of Bangladesh, in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The world today is witnessing an unprecedented movement of people across national boundaries, seeking economic opportunities as well as due to poverty, security and conflict. Given these changing multidimensional characteristics of both migrants and refugees the UN General Assembly has called for the first time for a high-level summit on the large movement of Refugees and Migrants on 19 September 2016 at the UN Headquarters in New York.

This event is on the side-line of the 71st Session of the UN General Assembly. With the participation of Heads of State and Government including Prime Minister of Bangladesh Hon’ble Sheikh Hasina, the summit is expected to adopt an Outcome Document and its two frameworks, one on Migration governance and the other on Refugee response.

It is in this backdrop that the half day National Seminar was organised, to inform and sensitise the key stakeholders nationally about the summit, the outcome document and its future implications for Bangladesh. This Seminar also provided important recommendations for the Bangladesh Delegation, for their effective participation at the UN Summit and following up on the commitments of the Outcome Document.

Considering the wide humanitarian, social and economic ramifications of the large movement of refugees and migrants in different parts of the world, as seen especially in the Middle East, Europe and Northern Africa, the speakers and participants called for more effective global, regional and local governance based on the new migration and refugee framework.

The National Seminar brought together representatives of the government, UN agencies, development partners, academicians, international NGOs, civil society, migrant associations, employer’s and worker’s associations.
