  1. ILO – Maga – NAITA hold Construction Craftsman Awarding Ceremony

    29 December 2015

    The award ceremony for 95 youth who successfully completed the new six months Construction Craftsman training scheme, will be held at the Auditorium of the Ministry of Skills Development and Vocational Training on December 29 2015.

    The Ministry of Labour and labour Relations has taken the lead in the country to promote and implement the Decent work agenda.

    The International Labour Organization (ILO), together with the Judges Institute of Sri Lanka and the Labour Tribunal Presidents Association organized a Symposium on International Labour Standards on the 13th and 14th of November 2015.

  1. ILO Organizes National Consultation prior to 8th Global Forum on Migration and Development

    20 October 2015

    International Labour Organization’s Country Office for Sri Lanka and the Maldives conducted a consultation among a wide range of stakeholders in the labour migration sector, on 12th October 2015, in Colombo, to draft recommendations to be shared by the Sri Lankan delegation at the Global Forum on Migration and Development, in Istanbul, Turkey.

  1. The District Public Employment Services Centre Launched in Mannar to resolve youth unemployment issues

    Under the chairmanship of Mr. M. Y. S. Deshapriya, District Secretary, Mannar, the District Public Employment Services (PES) Center of Mannar District was declared open by Mr. Willem Verpoest, First Counsellor, Head of Contracts, Finances and Audits Section, European Union Delegation for Sri Lanka and Maldives and Mr. H. G. G. J. Dharmasena, Director General, Department of Manpower and Employment at the Mannar District Secretariat on 30th September 2015.

  2. Workshop for ILO constituents on Mediation and Conciliation.

    17 - 18 September 2015

    International Labour Organization’s Country Office for Sri Lanka and the Maldives conducted a two day training programme on mediation and conciliation for the ILO constituents on the 17th and 18th of September in Colombo.

  3. Award wining actress joins ILO to boost young people's awareness of rights and responsibilities at work

    5 - 10 September 2015

    Renowned actress Pooja Umashankar joined the International Labour Organization (ILO) on September 5 and 10, 2015, facilitating learning and awareness raising sessions aimed at promoting labour rights and responsibilities in the work place for young people. Both sessions took place during ILO supported Job fairs: the EDEX Mid-year Expo held in Colombo, attracting over 10,000 young visitors and the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce ‘Careerlead’ organised at Rajarata University in the Anuradhapura district, attracting nearly 5,000 students from several districts in the north and east.

  4. VTASL and ILO join hands to introduce labour market oriented vocational training in North and East

    4 September 2015

    Under the European Union Support for District Development Programme (EU-SDDP) ILO has entered into an agreement with Vocational Training Authority of Sri Lanka (VTASL) on 4th September 2015 to introduce labour market oriented skills training and to improve delivery capacity of selected vocational training centres in Vavuniya, Mannar, Batticaloa and Ampara districts.

  1. ILO Assistant Director General &Regional Director for Asia & the Pacific to visit Sri Lanka.

    8 August 2015

    At the invitation of the Ministry of Labour, the ILO Assistant Director General and Regional Director for Asia & the Pacific, Ms Tomoko Nishimoto, will make her first official visit to Sri Lanka from 8th to 15th August 2015.

  2. Workshop on Workplace Cooperation for Human Resources Managers and Compliance Managersin the Apparel Sector in Sri Lanka.

    The International Labour Organization’s Office for Sri Lanka and the Maldives together with the Sri Lanka Apparel Exporters Association, conducted a one day training programme on workplace cooperation for Human Resources Managers and Compliance Managers in the apparel sector on the 6th of August in Colombo.

  1. Commemoration of World Day Against Child Labour 2015

    The annual World Day Against Child Labour has been observed on 12th June 2015 since 2002. The theme for this year is Say No to child labour, Yes to Quality Education. Education is a human right and a key factor in reducing poverty and child labour.

  2. The First District Public Employment Services Centre Launched in Vavuniya to Help Youth Jobseekers

    The District Public Employment Services (PES) Center of Vavuniya District was declared open by Mr. Herath Yapa, Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Mr. Donglin Li, Country Director, ILO Office for Sri Lanka and the Maldives at the District Secretariat on 11th June 2013.

  3. ILO Provides Employable Skills for Women to Set Up a Garment Unit in Mannar

    Twenty-five women of Naanaattan DS Division of Mannar District are to be trained in Modern Dress Making to set up a mini garment unit as a sustainable business.

  4. ILO Continues Farmer Empowerment through Economic Development

    8 June 2015

    The cooperative movement in the North reached another milestone when the newly constructed cooperative complex of Vinayagapuram Farmers’ Cooperative Society of Mulankavil in Poonakary Division, Killinochchi district was officially handed over to the cooperative by Mr. Subinay Nandy, the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Sri Lanka, and Mr. Donglin Li, ILO Country Director for Sri Lanka and the Maldives on the 8th of June, 2015.

  5. ILO –NAITA and MAGA Engineering launch a pilot public-private partnership to provide on-the-job training for young people in the construction sector

    ILO, the National Apprenticeship and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA) and MAGA Engineering (Pvt.) Ltd agreed to launch - under the guidance of the Ministry of Skills Development and Vocational Training -a pilot project for job based training for young people in the construction sector.
