Enhancing Protection and Welfare of Sri Lankan Migrant Workers Abroad

A symposium on enhancing protection and welfare of Sri Lankan migrant workers, through revision of the Operational Manual for Labour Sections of Sri Lankan Diplomatic Missions, between 18th – 20th September 2019 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The ILO has been working with the Ministry of Foreign Employment (MFE) and Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on updating the Operational Manual which guides Sri Lankan diplomatic missions in the welfare and protection of Sri Lankans working overseas.

The revision of the Operational Manual is part of a broader engagement between the ILO and the Government of Sri Lanka to promote safe and regular migration through improved policies and legal frameworks for migrant workers and their families.

The three-day symposium will bring together Heads of Mission and Labour Attaches from 16 diplomatic missions in countries of destination, along with senior officials of the MFE, MFA and Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE), to review common issues and best practices. It will include training and capacity building on the prevention of sexual and gender based violence, human trafficking and forced labour.
