Asia-Pacific region awareness creation workshop to maximize the positive and minimize the negative impacts of implementation of Climate Change response measures

Awareness creation workshop to maximize the positive and minimize the negative impacts of implementation of Climate Change response measures’ organised by the UNFCCC and the ILO and hosted in the Maldives on 27-29 August 2019

Climate action is about protecting people – their lives, jobs, and livelihoods today – and preserving prospects for youth and future generations.

There is no need to choose between protecting the environment and creating jobs. The green transition could create millions of decent jobs if the right policy mix is put in place.

A greener society by itself is not a guarantee of a fairer society. The shift towards low-carbon resilient economies must ensure a just transition for all, based on solid research on employment, social and economic impacts of climate action and on social dialogue. Skills and enterprise development, and social protection for the vulnerable will be key in ensuring the achievement of ambitious climate goals and sustainable development.

For these reasons the UNFCCC and ILO are working together to generate the awareness and build capacities at national and international level. The ‘Awareness creation workshop to maximize the positive and minimize the negative impacts of implementation of Climate Change response measures’ organised by the UNFCCC and the ILO and hosted in the Maldives on 27-29 August 2019 will be instrumental in this respect. It will bring together stakeholders from the region and global experts and policy-makers to share knowledge and experiences around a just transition and economic diversification.

The Asia- Pacific region is highly vulnerable to climate change, but it can also leverage huge opportunities associated with the transition, with 14 million jobs that could be created. The workshop will be a step towards the realisation of these opportunities and an ecological transformation that is fair and inclusive.
