National Vocational Qualification certificate awards ceremony, Batticaloa

Under European Union funding, ILO join hands with NAITA to award formal NVQ certification to 116 skilled workers to strengthen human resource capacity in Batticaloa.

As former conflict-affected regions are now moving towards rehabilitation and sustainable development, human capacity development plays a key role in reaching the goals set by the government of Sri Lanka to develop the country in to a middle income economy. As a step to achieving this Goal, under the European Union Support to District Development Programme (EU-SDDP) in Batticaloa District, International Labour Organization (ILO) joined hands with National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA) to increase the certified skilled labour force in 09 different trades such as Mason, Plumber, Carpenter, Welder, Motor cycle Mechanic, Computer Application Assistant, Computer Hardware Technician and Electrical Wire Man. 116 skilled workers (103 males and 13 females) in these fields who obtained their skills outside the formal VT providers and did not have NVQ certification were identified by NAITA and provided with a NVQ level 3 or 4 certification as per their competencies under the Recognition of Prior learning (RPL) system.

The NVQ Certification Awarding Ceremony for 116 youth of Batticaloa District was held on 19th April 2016 at the Derba hall of Manmunai North Divisional Secretariat. Mr. S. Giritharan, Additional Government Agent was the Chief Guest, while Vice Chairman of NAITA Dr. A.U.C. Athukorale was the Guest of Honour. Mr. Neduncheliyan- Director,Planning, Mr. V. Thavarasa- Divisional Secretary, Manmunai North, Mr. S. Ahilan-President, Batticaloa District Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture, Mr. Ranjithamoorthy- President, Batticaloa Constructors Association and Mr. R. Sivapragasm- National Project Coordinator of ILO Skilled project were special guests.
