  1. Launch of the Pre-departure Training Guides, Safe Labour Migration Information Package and the Code of Ethical Conduct for Recruitment Agents

  2. New ILO Report finds Global Number of Child Labourers Falls

    A new report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) has found that the global number of child labourers has declined by one third since 2000, with the largest absolute decline in the Asia Pacific region.

  3. ILO to Launch Toolkit on Poverty Reduction through Tourism

    05 August 2013

    ILO will launch its toolkit on poverty reduction through tourism at the Chef’s Guild awards ceremony to be held at the BMICH, Colombo. The launch will be followed by a workshop carried out by ILO in collaboration with the Chefs Guild of Sri Lanka to introduce the toolkit to stakeholders.

  4. Ratnapura - a Child Labour Free Zone by 2016!

    The District Secretary and the Administration of Ratnapura, assisted by the Ministry of Labour and Labour Relations, with technical and financial support from the ILO are embarking on a journey that will make the district officially free of Child Labour by June 2016.

  5. ILO and EFC launch a new programme for SME’s for Sustaining Competitive & Responsible Enterprises in Sri Lanka.

    In May, the Employers’ Federation of Ceylon (EFC) partnered with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to launch SCORE (Sustaining Competitive & Responsible Enterprises), a course to support SME’s on how to forge an enterprise culture of sustainable competitiveness and growth.

  6. ILO and its Tripartite Partners sign Sri Lanka’s Decent Work Country Programme for 2013 – 2017

    The Government, Employer, Workers Organisations and ILO Office signed on the Decent Work Country Programme (DWCP) for Sri Lanka, during a ceremony held on Thursday 23nd May 2013 in Colombo.

    ILO Country Director for Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Mr. Donglin Li, paid a courtesy call on Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Waheed on 19th May at the President’s office in the capital Male.

  8. World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2013

    The International Labour Organization (ILO) has called for an “urgent and vigorous” global campaign to tackle the growing number of work-related diseases, which claim an estimated 2 million lives per year. The World Day for Safety and Health at Work in 2013 focuses on the prevention of occupational diseases.

  9. Maldives ratifies the eight ILO fundamental Conventions

    The Maldives has ratified the eight ILO fundamental Conventions on 4 January 2013, dealing with four categories of fundamental principles and rights at work: freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining; the elimination of all forms of forced or compulsory labour; the effective abolition of child labour; and the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.


  1. Thirteenth National Convention on Women’s Studies

    The National Convention on Women’s Studies organized by the Centre for Women’s Research (CENWOR) was held from the 27th – 30th July 2012. The inauguration was at Sri Lanka Foundation Institute (SLFI). This is the thirteenth in the series, which CENWOR started in 1989 to provide a forum for those conducting research on gender issues to present their findings.

Human Trafficking is gaining increased global attention as a transnational organized crime. The profits generated from trafficking in human beings are significantly high, thereby making it one of the most lucrative criminal industries in the world.

  4. Vavuniya North Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society to support more than 2,000 paddy farmers

    The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society (MPCS) of Vavuniya North have joined forces to re-tool a major rice milling operation damaged during the years of Sri Lanka’s civil conflict.

  5. ILO Country Director Mr Donglin Li Conferred with Pakistan’s Highest Civilian Award

    Pakistan President H.E. Mr Asif Ali Zardari on the occasion of National Day conferred the SITARA-I-QUAID-I-AZAM Civil Award to Mr Donglin Li, former Country Director of International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Country Office for Pakistan, for his excellent services to the people of Pakistan. Mr Li is the present Country Director of the ILO Country Office for Sri Lanka and the Maldives. The Investiture Ceremony for the Awards took place on 23 March 2011 at the Pakistan High Commission in Colombo, hosted by H.E. Ms Seema Illahi Baloch, the High Commissioner of Pakistan.
