The International Labour Office Colombo coordinates the visit of the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights of migrants to Sri Lanka

Mr. François Crépeau, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights of migrants, visited the country on invitation by the Government from 19th to 26th May 2014 and held discussions with a range of Government officials responsible for migration and labour, the National Human Rights Commission, international organizations, trade unions, civil society, the private sector and both prospective and returned migrants. He visited the Mirihana detention centre, Boossa prison, the Sahana Piyasa welfare centre of the SLBFE in Katunayake, the head office of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE), Provincial centres and training centres in Kurunegala and Kandy, and the migrant resource centre in Tangalle.

ILO, from the UNCT side, coordinated the whole visit process. The Special Rapporteur appreciated very much the high-level arrangements and well-organised programme made for his successful visit.
