On 26 July 2022, UN agencies representatives of ILO, PAHO/WHO, UNECLAC, UNEP and the UN Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) of Trinidad and Tobago officially launched the project entitled “Modernising Trinidad and Tobago’s Statistical Ecosystem through Enhanced SDG Data Development”.

The project, with a duration of two years, aims to support the national statistical architecture in Trinidad and Tobago (TTO) by making greater use of the latest digital technologies and international standards (including those related to labour, environment, gender and human rights). In addition, it will bolster local partnerships and collaboration on data collection, legislative good practices on data and statistics.

The Honourable Penelope Beckles, Minister of Planning and Development and Mr Andre Blanchard, Acting Director of Statistics, Central Statistical Office (CSO), Trinidad and Tobago, received a donation of equipment from Mr. Dennis Zulu, United Nations Resident Coordinator a.i. and Director, ILO Decent Work Team and Office for the Caribbean.

The donation (75 tablets and 10 laptops), provided by the ILO with financial support from the United Nations Joint SDG Fund1, is intended to support the roll out of the new continuous sample of the population survey (CSSP) and will be used specifically to collect answers to survey questions within individual households and then proceed to advanced analysis of the microdata by a dedicated CSO team.

The hardware complements the ongoing support provided by the ILO to revise the questionnaire of the CSSP thereby ensuring adherence to latest international statistical standards, notably those laid out during the 19th (2013) and 20th (2018) International Conferences of Labour Statisticians (ICLS).

“The Central Statistical Office is extremely grateful to the United Nations and the International Labour Organization for the donation of digital equipment,” Mr. Blanchard said. “This donation will greatly facilitate the modernization of the data collection and processing activities of the Central Statistical Office by providing the physical resources necessary for the implementation of the Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) methodology in the conduct of surveys. The CAPI approach to data collection will enable data to be processed more efficiently.”
