ILO seminar for judges on International Labour Standards (ILS)

Judges from national courts, industrial courts and tribunals, will meet from 25-29 September 2007 to discuss ways of making full use of the resources of international labour law in their daily practice, contributing to better implementation of international labour standards at the national level.

PORT OF SPAIN (ILO News) - His Honour Mr. Gregory Baker, Acting President, Industrial Court of Trinidad and Tobago, will deliver the feature address at the opening ceremony of an International Labour Organization training seminar entitled “International Labour Standards for Judges, Lawyers and Legal Educators.” The opening ceremony will take place on Tuesday 25th September 2007 at 8:30a.m. at the Hilton Trinidad and Conference Centre, Port of Spain.

Judges from national courts, industrial courts and tribunals, will meet from 25-29 September 2007 to discuss ways of making full use of the resources of international labour law in their daily practice, contributing to better implementation of international labour standards at the national level. Participants are expected from eight Caribbean countries.

The meeting is being sponsored by the International Training Centre of the ILO, based in Turin, Italy and the ILO Subregional Office for the Caribbean, based in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

International Labour Standards, which are adopted by governments, employers’ and workers’ organizations from member States of the International Labour Organization, not only provide an important point of reference for national labour legislation but also contribute to strengthening national case law in labour matters. The seminar is targeted to law professionals who are in a position to apply international labour standards.

The seminar will cover topics such as the international labour standards system, the added value of standards as it pertains to freedom of association, collective bargaining and non-discrimination in employment and occupation, including termination of employment. The incorporation of international law into national case law and the ILO's supervisory mechanisms that deal with the implementation of international labour standards, will also be discussed.

Facilitators of the ILO seminar are Mr. Xavier Beaudonnet from the International Training Centre of the ILO in Turin, Italy and Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, Director, International Labour Standards Department, ILO, Geneva. Additional resource persons include Professor Jeff Cumberbatch, Deputy Dean, Faculty of Law, University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados, and Professor Janice R. Bellace, Professor of Legal Studies and Business Ethics and Management, University of Pennsylvania.

Other speakers at the opening ceremony include Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, Director, International Labour Standards Department, ILO, Geneva; Dr. Ana Teresa Romero, Director, ILO Subregional Office for the Caribbean and Mr. Xavier Beaudonnet, of the ILO's International Training Centre.
