Extension of social protection in the context of formalization policies

This training is especially aimed at technicians of social security institutions of the Caribbean region who are involved in the design, implementation and monitoring of social protection policies and schemes.

This training activity, organized by the ILO in collaboration with the International Social Security Association - ISSA, is especially aimed at technicians of social security institutions of the Caribbean region who are involved in the design, implementation and monitoring of social protection policies and schemes. Directors of social security institutions of the following jurisdictions were invited to appoint a participant:

Anguilla; Antigua and Barbuda; Aruba; Bahamas; Barbados; Belize; Bermuda; British Virgin Islands; Cayman Islands; Curacao; Dominica; Grenada; Guyana;  Jamaica; Montserrat; Saint Kitts and Nevis; Saint Lucia; Sint Maarten; Saint Vincent and the Grenadines; Suriname; Trinidad and Tobago; Turks and Caicos Islands.

Objective of the training 

  • Capacity-building of participants about the ILO’s strategies, policies and tools for the extension of social protection and formalization;
  • Capacity-building of participants about formalization policies which have social protection as a main element in their design;
  • Knowledge-sharing among participants about the policies and practices operating in their respective jurisdictions;
  • Revision of success stories in different regions of the world that successfully increased social protection coverage in the formalization process;
  • Identification of target groups to extend social protection coverage through formalization; and
  • Elaboration of proposal at national and regional level to increase social protection coverage in the context of formalization.

Facilitators of the training

This training will be facilitated be Mr Ariel Pino, Social Security and Occupational Safety and Health Specialist and Mr Diego Rei, Employment Services and Labour Market Policies Specialist, both from the ILO DWT and Office for the Caribbean,  as well as Mr Raúl Ruggia-Frick, Head of Centre for Excellence Knowledge, ISSA.
