Occupational safety through the eyes of children

The All-Ukrainian Children’s Drawing Competition “Occupational safety through the eyes of children – 2022” took place this year despite hostilities. The event was organized by the OSH magazine with support from the State Labour Service of Ukraine and the ILO Project funded by the EU.

The Competition was held for the 11th time. Its purpose is to draw the attention of society, particularly children and youth, to the importance of occupational safety and health.

The drawings were created by children aged between 6 and 18. Their works impress by their originality, deepness and excellence. They include both playful comics and cartoons, and serious works on workplace hazards or situations related to hostilities.

In total, 6,653 child drawings were received for the Competition this year. They were initially evaluated on the regional level. The best 197 works took part in the all-Ukrainian final round in summer of 2022.

This year, the Competition became unique not only because of the hardship related to hostilities in Ukraine. The young artists’ works reached the European Union level for the first time.

In October 2022, the Competition’s traditional partner – the ILO Project funded by the EU – presented the winner works during the ILO-ELA workshop “Reducing the risks of labour exploitation, trafficking in human beings, forced labour and undeclared work faced by the Ukrainian displaced persons” held in Budapest. The Project invited representatives of European countries to offer the child works for auctions and donate the funds earned to support the next competitions. We thank the European Labour Authority (ELA) and the Labour Inspectorate of Portugal, which supported the initiative.

The ILO Project has been contributing significantly to the labour protection system reform in Ukraine for a long time. The Editorial Board and the Project team held many relevant and socially important events together: conferences, seminars, trainings. Besides, we highly appreciate the ILO Project’s contribution to development and support of the All-Ukrainian Children’s Drawing Competition “Occupational safety through the eyes of children – 2022” because we together support the young creative generation and popularize the idea of involving children in formation of safe behaviour at work and in everyday life in the world, making work and life safer and the world better."
