Ukrainian Student Advertising Festival 2021

Winning the contest helped me believe in my potential – Diana Prykhodko

Diana Prykhodko is a fourth-year graphic design student at the Kyiv National University of Technology and Design. In the autumn of 2021, Diana took part in the Ukrainian Student Advertising Festival for the first time. Her poster won third place in the "Work safely — save lives and health!" category, supported by the ILO Project funded by the EU. We asked Diana to tell us about her impressions of the contest.

It concerns everyone

Occupational safety and health are important for everyone. Unfortunately, Ukraine is ahead of the European countries in the number of accidents at work, often caused by workers' and their managers' negligence or ignorance. That is why it is necessary to create and communicate social advertising to make more Ukrainians aware of the problem. I contributed to this common cause by taking part in the festival.

My work is called "Work safely — save lives and health". On my poster, I wanted to show that disregarding safety rules can cause serious health issues and even death. People should remember it and act responsibly at workplaces.

Another concern is the employers' reluctance to declare their workers. It is usually that kind of enterprises that most frequently disregard safety rules, and where many dangerous situations and injuries occur.

I was offered undeclared work too, but I refused. People do it to evade taxation. Doing so is against the law and a significant disadvantage for the state. Besides, the workers are totally unprotected. They can be fired without any explanation, forced to work overtime without pay, and paid sick leaves may be denied. In essence, it is similar to being a slave.

I was very surprised when I found out that I had won. Not every person believes in themselves, and sometimes an impetus like that is required to give a lot of energy and improve self-belief. It was awesome!
