Conference ‘Decent work for the migrant workers’

On June 24 the Conference ‘Decent work for the migrant workers’ is to be held by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Kyiv. It will gather experts and media to present the achievements of the joint European Union and ILO Project ‘Effective Governance of Labour Migration and its Skills Dimensions’ and discuss further steps to be taken by the state to guarantee the right and integration of migrants into the Ukrainian society.

According to the project’s survey, between January 2010 and June 2012 there were 1.2 million migrant workers in Ukraine. About one quarter of them is staying in Ukraine illegally without adequate social protection; almost 50% of them are engaged in short-term jobs or other jobs which requires a lower level of education and skills. Migrant workers face multiple disadvantages including the lack of social security coverage in the absence of proper coordination mechanisms between sending and receiving countries.
