  1. Albanian judges use International Labour Standards in court decisions

    The ILO and the International Training Center of the ILO, together with the Albanian School of Magistrates, trained 50 Albanian judges and candidate magistrates on International Labour Standards (ILS) and how to use them in domestic case law. ILS are a source of labour law and a guide for judges on how to interpret labour law, strengthen court decisions or settle labour disputes. The ILO training was organized by the "Access to Justice in Labour Law Disputes through Mediation and Conciliation" project, funded by the Government of Sweden.

    Meet the Specialists: Kenichi Hirose, Social protection

    Ken Hirose, Senior Technical Specialist for Social protection, Occupational Safety and Health, and Labour inspection shares how he assists ILO partners and constituents in improving the quality of work and safety of workers in Central and Eastern Europe. The challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic at workplaces made ILO services in these areas sought after. In the post-pandemic period, extending social protection coverage to workers in non-standard forms of employment (part-time, undeclared, platform etc) will be a priority.

Employers organizations work to create a business-friendly environment for their members. The ILO service offer focuses on recommendations Employers can use to influence national policies and regulations on entreprises; assistance to develop better services to members; and advising Employers on how to improve performance and grow their membership.

    Daniela Zampini, the Employment Specialist of the ILO Office for Central and Eastern Europe explains what she does to create more and better jobs, how she works with governments, employers, workers, civil society organizations or municipalities, and what achievements she is most proud of. In 2020, due to COVID-19 related lockdowns, confinements, and other restrictions, CEE countries lost on average 8 per cent of their total working hours. Daniela explains how the ILO responded to the crisis.

    Magnus Berge, Senior Specialist for Workers' Organizations explains how he supports ILO work with Trade Unions in Central and Eastern Europe. He promotes Trade Unions so that they can work more effectively to improve working conditions of workers and to protect workers' rights across the region. He advises Trade Unions when their rights are violated. ILO work with Workers organizations focuses on four areas: 1) helping Trade Unions modernize their operations and structures, 2) improve their service delivery to members, 3) helping them to communicate better about laws, workers' rights and services available for them, and 4) helping to draft good policy proposals on labour laws based on International Labour Standards.

  1. EU4Business ILO project supported start-ups in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Stories of beneficiaries

    Within the EU4Business project, with EU funding, the ILO promoted inter-municipal cooperation to provide inclusive support to start-ups in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Local Employment Partnership established cooperation among three municipalities (Jablanica, Konjic and Kakanj) to support vulnerable groups to register and run their own businesses. Technical support included entrepreneurship training based on the ILO Start and Improve Your Business methodology. Financial support meant grants for the registration and operation of new businesses. Over 110 individuals from vulnerable categories (long term unemployed women, youth, persons with disabilities and persons over 50 years of age) received entrepreneurship training that resulted in the registration of 36 new businesses and generated over 40 new jobs.

  2. ILO provides cash transfers for female textile workers dismissed because of the COVID-19 pandemic in Albania

    Through the “Empowering Women Against COVID-19” project, financed by the Government of Sweden, the ILO provided cash transfers for dismissed female workers, and supported ten textile and footwear companies to establish healthy and safe conditions in the workplace.

    Mihai Balan's small business in southern Moldova usually makes decorative souvenirs, but with the COVID-19 pandemic he shifted production to make visors for frontline health workers. Mihai Balan is a beneficiary of the ILO project "Promotion of Youth Employment", which is financed through the ILO Regular Budget Supplementary Account​.
