World of Work report 2012: International Labour Organization sees Europe stuck in austerity trap

According the ILO’s “World of Work Report 2012: Better Jobs for a Better Economy”, despite signs that economic growth has resumed in some regions, the global employment situation is alarming and shows no sign of recovery in the near future. This worsening situation reflects the austerity trap in advanced economies, primarily in Europe.

Towards an inclusive and green economy: Flanders, ILO and SERV stress the importance of green jobs

Investing in skills development, anticipating labour market changes and promoting social dialogue: these are considered crucial conditions in a just transition towards a green and sustainable economy. These elements were highlighted as crucial for the Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development, during a Green Jobs Conference jointly organized by the Government of Flanders, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Social and Economic Council of Flanders (SERV).

ILO-Brussels organised a Consultation on “Decent Work for youth – the EU dimension”
28 March 2012
The ILO Consultation, hosted by the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), brought together the European Youth Forum, the EU social partners, the EESC, European Commission, Danish EU Council Presidency, EU Member States and political groups at the European Parliament. The outcomes of the consultation will feed into the ILO Global Youth Employment Forum in May 2012, the June 2012 International Labour Conference and the on-going EU debates.

Preparations for the June 2012 International Labour Conference on Social Protection Floors

The ILO Office complemented the UN response to the EC public consultation on social protection in development cooperation with an ILO response, taking into account the ILO tripartite structure and the upcoming discussion at the June 2012 International Labour Conference (ILC) regarding a Recommendation on Social Protection Floors. The ILO Office requested the EU development cooperation to take account of the outcome of the 2012 ILC in order to benefit from any possible Recommendation.

ILO Governing Body pays tribute to victims of bus crash

At the start of the 313th session of the Governing Body of the International Labour Organization, its members observed one minute of silence as a mark of respect for the victims of the tragic bus accident in Sierre, Switzerland.

New ILO Working Paper: "Social dialogue and collective bargaining in times of crisis: The case of Greece"

This paper is part of a series of national studies on collective bargaining and effective responses to the crisis under the Global Product on ‘Supporting collective bargaining and sound industrial relations’. It analyses the profound impacts of the financial crisis on industrial relations institutions and practices in Greece. A series of austerity measures have been put in place through new legislation. These include prohibition of salary increases, cuts in pay and benefits for public-sector employees, limits on public-sector hiring, increases in VAT and other taxes, changes in the limitations on mass layoffs and levels of severance compensation payments, and introduction of sub-minimum wages for new entrants to the labour market and those who are on apprenticeships.

The social protection floor at the European Parliament

In January 2012, the Green Group at the European Parliament (EP) organised a Conference Debate on Social Protection. ILO-Brussels presented the ILO’s initiatives on strengthening the coverage of social protection as a response to the financial, economic and social crisis.
