    The ILO launches on 10 July 2012 its new estimate of forced labour in the EU-27. The ILO estimate covers thousands of cases of forced labour and human trafficking reported over the period 2002-2011.

    Guy Ryder, recently elected as Director-General of the ILO, had an exchange on 21 June 2012 with the European Parliament Employment and Social Affairs Committee. He addressed the future and challenges ahead of the ILO, the important role of the EU in addressing the employment and social dimension of the global financial and economic crisis and the significance of ILO-EU cooperation.

    New ILO Recommendation on social protection floors

    19 June 2012

    The International Labour Conference adopted on 14 June 2012 the Recommendation no. 202 concerning national floors for social protection by a vote of 452 to 0, with 1 abstention. Social protection floors are nationally defined sets of basic social security guarantees which secure protection aimed at preventing or alleviating poverty, vulnerability and social exclusion. This new labour standard is also very important for EU external action.
