Symposium looks at “what works” to improve youth employment outcomes
The ILO is holding a symposium from March 6-8 in Doha to discuss best practices and ideas to boost youth employment and productivity in the Middle East and North Africa.
BEIRUT - A three-day symposium opens in Doha (Qatar) on 6 March to discuss “what works” to increase the employment and labour productivity of youth in the region and beyond.
The event - organized by the ILO in partnership with Silatech, Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab and the Arab Urban Development Institute - will bring together policy makers and practitioners as well as academics and researchers from the Middle East and around the world.
Participants will share best practices as well as recent findings of impact evaluations on youth employment, entrepreneurship and productivity from the Middle East, North Africa and other developing regions.
“Unemployment, underemployment and vulnerable employment have created a massive strain on labour markets around the globe,” said Azita Berar Awad, head of the ILO’s Employment Policy Department. “As governments are seeking evidence on how to improve the employment situation of youth, this event will help to gather evidence on best policies and look at experimental research.”
The symposium, which is part of a series of events that the ILO is organizing around the world on "What works” to improve labour market outcomes for youth, aims to facilitate new partnerships among donors, implementers and researchers.
It also comes at a time when” jobs and skills for youth” has been highlighted as one of the ILO’s “Areas of critical importance”.
The first symposium is taking place at Georgetown University in Doha. It is organized in partnership with Silatech, Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab and the Arab Urban Development Institute.
