Jordan's PM: Investing in human resources, pivotal to social and economic progress

While addressing the 103rd International Labour Conference, H.E. Mr Abdullah Ensour, Prime Minister of Jordan, stressed that political, social and economic reforms in his country constitute an ongoing process which need to be sustained by democratic consent. The Jordanian Government is convinced that the growth of the country's economy is conditional to the growth of the productivity of its labour force. Mr Ensour also called for the support of the international community to help the Kingdom in dealing with the consequences of the Syrian humanitarian crisis affecting Jordan.

Protecting the rights of migrant workers in Jordan

With labour migration as one of the topics of discussion at the 103rd International Labour Conference, ILO TV reports on the situation of migrant workers in Jordan, where the majority of them have low-skilled and low productivity jobs. Despite recent, significant strides made by the Jordanian government to clamp down on exploitation at the workplace, more needs to be done to enhance the rights of migrant workers - not just in Jordan but worldwide.

Upgrading Apprenticeships: route to Decent Work in Jordan

The ILO project ''Tripartite Action for Youth Employment in Jordan'' works with the government as well as workers' and employers' representatives to tackle youth employment issues in the country. One of the project's components is the upgrading of apprenticeships, which aims at improving practices in the informal sector. The video examines some of the elements of upgrading apprenticeship systems through the piloting of the programme in the auto repair sector.

Syrian Child Labour in Jordan

The ILO response plan to the Syrian refugee crisis in Jordan has identified child labour as a priority. It is estimated there are currently over 580,000 registered Syrian refugees living in Jordan. While around 160,000 refugees live in designated camps, the remaining refugee population has found shelter in host communities in rural and urban areas across Jordan. Many Syrian children are at risk of falling into the trap of child labour - particularly its worst forms. Already, the Jordanian Government says that child labour has doubled nationwide - to 60,000 - since the refugee influx began in 2011.

The Ability Factor: Employing people with disabilities makes good business sense

People with disabilities are the world's largest minority group (1 billion people — 15% of the world's population; of which 785 million are of working age). They face many barriers to employment, including physical, information and attitudinal barriers. Stereotypes and misconceptions prevent them from accessing jobs because these often focus on their disability instead of ability, when in fact they can and do work. This short video aims to raise awareness about the benefits of employing people with disabilities.

Decent work opportunities to poor Jordanian women in Ajloun

In 2011, the Goverment of Jordan adopted a comprehensive ten-year National Employment Strategy that was developed with the assistance of the Internatioanl Labour Organization. Among other things, the strategy calls for increasing Jordanian employment in industries, such as the garment sector, which currently employ a large number of migrant workers. This video highlights the efforts of one factory in a remote area to provide decent work opportunities to poor Jordanian women and the impact in is having on their lives.

Labour problems in Qatar "eminently fixable" says ILO

ILO Director General Guy Ryder discussed accusations of forced labour and other labour violations on Qatar's World Cup and other construction sites, saying that while there had been progress to address these issues on paper, implementation is the major problem but an "eminently fixable" one. He went on to say that Qatar has the resources to do the job and that the necessary political will needs to be applied on all sides before more lives are lost on construction sites.
