  1. Workshop with Social Security Departments on Challenges and Opportunities for Extending Social Security to the Private Sector in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq

    On 11 February 2024, the International Labour Organization (ILO), together with the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (MoLSA) of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) co-hosted a workshop with representatives of social security offices to discuss legislation, policies and reforms needed to advance the extension of social security coverage to private sector workers in the KRI.

  1. Social protection in the Gulf countries: what rights can migrant workers access?

    This event will launch a first-of-a-kind comprehensive report on migrant workers’ access to social protection across the GCC countries: Social protection for migrant workers in countries of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC): A regional mapping of provisions on paper and in practice – prepared by ILO, in collaboration with ODI and IOM.

  2. Multi-regional Trade Union Dialogue and Cooperation: Reinforcing Commitment and Fostering Action for Migrant Workers’ Rights

    2 - 3 November 2023

    As a follow-up to the commitment of the six regional trade union confederations to defend, protect and promote the rights of migrant workers, this multi-regional trade union dialogue on labour migration identified good practices in implementation and developed a concrete plan of action for trade union collaboration going forward.

  1. Africa Labour Migration Conference

    18 - 20 October 2023

    The ILO and the African Union Commission, in collaboration with IOE and ITUC Africa held the African Countries Labour Migration Conference in October in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire. The Dialogue among African countries focussed on fostering cooperation and consensus building on labour migration governance and the protection of African migrant workers. SDC through the FAIRWAY project was a key funder for the conference

  2. Workshop with GCC governments promotes a rights-based approach to employment contract termination for migrant workers in the Gulf

    17 - 18 October 2023

    The ILO, together with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), UN Women and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and the GCC Executive Bureau co-hosted a workshop with representatives of the six GCC governments (United Arab Emirates, Kingdom of Bahrain, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Sultanate of Oman, State of Qatar and State of Kuwait) to discuss legislation, policies, reforms, good practices and remaining challenges in addressing issues around ‘unexplained absences’ from the workplace.

  1. FAIRWAY Migrant Resource Center Symposium

    25 - 27 September 2023

    The International Labour Organization (ILO), through the FAIRWAY programme convened a symposium on Migrant Resource Centres (MRCs) that brought together participants from three African countries of origin: Uganda, Kenya, and Nigeria. The central theme of the symposium revolved around enhancing the effectiveness of MRCs in providing access to information and essential services for both potential and in-service migrant workers, as well as the families they leave behind.

    The National Consultation will discuss the current system of judicial and non-judicial resolution of labour disputes, with a focus on the Ministry of Labour’s role, and to explore constraints and challenges in the current structure; and explore ways forward, including review of promising practices and tools that could support further dialogue on the labour dispute system.

    This event examined social protection challenges faced by migrant workers in the Gulf countries, and provided insights on legal provisions and potential avenues for reform.

  2. Inspectors in Iraq train on ILO tools and procedures, with a focus on social security

    13 - 15 June 2023

    The trainings brought together heads of social security departments and social security inspectors, organised under the joint programme to reform social protection in Iraq, with the support of the European Union.
