ILO and constituents discuss social protection reform in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq

The meeting focused on efforts to enhance social protection for workers and their families.

The ILO and its tripartite constituents in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, including Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Ms. Zakia Sayed Salih, and Director General of Labour and Social Security Dr. Arif Hito, held a consultative meeting on efforts to enhance social protection for workers and their families.

The meeting also brought together representatives of the Ministry of Planning, Members of Parliament, as well as representatives of workers and employers' organisations.

Efforts include reducing the gaps between the public and private insurance systems and making both systems more efficient and comprehensive for future generations.

The ILO is providing technical support to the Government and its social partners on a draft Social Security Bill for the Private Sector to bring it into line with international standards governing social security and to ensure a smooth and efficient application of the law.

With the support of the European Union, the ILO, together with UNICEF and WFP are working with the Government of Iraq, including the Kurdistan Regional Government, to reform the social protection system, with the aim to build a more sustainable and inclusive system.
