ILO and the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq strengthen collaborations to advance labour governance, working conditions in the country

With support from the European Union, the ILO is implementing a project in Iraq which seeks to enhance labour governance, inspection and working conditions, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

ILO representatives held a meeting with the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), Kwestan Mohamad to discuss collaboration to advance decent work in the country. The meeting took place under the framework of an EU-funded project entitled “Enhancing labour governance, inspection and working conditions in response to COVID-19,” which seeks to contribute to the socio-economic development of Iraq through enhancing the application of International Labour Standards and national labour legislation and promoting social dialogue, social justice, and decent work.

The meeting on August 22 introduced the Minister to the project, its activities and progress so far; and discussed preparations for the project's first Steering Committee meeting, which will be held in Baghdad at the end of September.

Following the meeting with the Minister, the ILO held a preparatory meeting with Steering Committee members, which included officials from various ministries and worker’s and employer’s organizations. The meeting highlighted progress made by the various entities working to support the project’s implementation and discussed some of the challenges along the way.

The meeting in September will be co-chaired by both the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs in Iraq and KRI, and will bring together relevant representatives from the Ministries of Agriculture, Health, Planning, Trade & Industry, Culture and Youth Affairs, as well as social partners.

The EU-supported project focuses on strengthening the labour inspection system and improving occupational safety and health (OSH) in line with international labour standards, through policy development and capacity building. The project works closely with social partners to raise their awareness on labour inspection, OSH and fundamental principles and rights at work, so they can better engage in programmes to promote compliance with labour legislations and respond to COVID-19. For more information, see Enhancing labour governance, inspection and working conditions in response to COVID-19
