Review of the draft retirement and social security law in Iraq

The ILO and representatives from the Government of Iraq will hold a technical meeting to review key findings of actuarial and legal assessments of the draft retirement and social security law currently under consideration by the Parliament, as part of efforts towards establishing a comprehensive social protection system in Iraq.

The ILO and representatives from the Government of Iraq will hold a meeting to discuss key findings of actuarial and legal assessments of the draft retirement and social security law currently under consideration by the Parliament. The draft law is an important step in extending social security for workers in the private sector, as part of efforts towards establishing a comprehensive social protection system in Iraq.

The legal and actuarial assessments were developed by the ILO, in line with International Labour Standards and international good practice.

The meeting will bring together officials from the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, including the Undersecretary for Labour Affairs from the Ministry, the Director General of the Workers' Retirement and Social Security Department, and the Director General of the Department of Labour and Vocational Training. It will also include representatives of the Parliamentarian Committee on Labour, Social Affairs and Displacement, along with senior ILO specialists.

During the two-day technical meeting, the ILO will present key findings from the assessments and highlight key aspects for consideration during the parliamentarian committee discussion, and agree on next steps. Further technical support will be proposed to the parliamentary committee for the finalization of the legislation as to ensure it is in line with international social security standards.

Similar meetings with employer and worker representatives in the country who are working in the field of social security are also planned in the coming weeks.

The event is part of efforts by the ILO, in collaboration with the European Union, to support social security reform in the country. The ILO has played an active role in the reform of social and labour legislation in Iraq in the past years and continues to support its social partners in the country on the implementation of social security reforms. One of the key priorities of the Iraq Decent Work Country Programme is to reduce vulnerabilities through extending and strengthening social protection, and to ensure adequate protection to all those in need, in a coordinated and cost-effective manner.
