COVID-19 safety measures developed for Cash for Work programmes in Jordan

The guidelines were developed with the support of the ILO and other agencies implementing Cash for Work programmes in Jordan to ensure the safe return of workers to their sites.

COVID-19 safeguarding guidelines have been developed by the Cash for Work working group in Jordan, to ensure the safe return of workers to their sites.

Led by the ILO and GIZ, the Cash for Work working group includes agencies and organizations supporting the implementation of Cash for Work programmes in the country through standardizing the process and procedures for Cash for Work for all projects.

The guidelines were written for implementing partners to allow sites to resume operations quickly and under comprehensive safety and protection measures, following the suspension of all work in mid-March due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The guidelines outline measures on protecting workers from infection, such as the provision of safety equipment and clothing for all workers, awareness raising for implementing partners and workers on COVID-19, guidelines on managing and supervising sites, procedures in case a worker falls ill, among other measures.

Available in Arabic and in English, the guidelines have been approved by the Ministry of Labour and published on a number of labour sites.

The ILO is implementing an Employment Intensive Infrastructure Programme in Jordan, with support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) of the Federal Republic of Germany, through the German Development Bank (KfW). The programme focuses on improving livelihoods through providing cash-for-work opportunities for thousands of vulnerable Jordanian citizens as well as Syrian refugees.

In June, the first of its workers began to return to work in the capital Amman, with six municipalities following suit in July.
