ILO holds ceremony to mark completion of training programme for Jordanian and Syrian construction workers in Jordan

The programme is part of efforts to help Syrian workers obtain work permits by boosting their skills and accreditation.

Jordanians and Syrian refugees working in Jordan’s construction sector will receive occupational certificates during a ceremony marking their successful completion of a skills training programme.

The ILO has partnered with the National Employment and Training Company (NET) to provide short courses for Jordanians and Syrians in floor layering, painting, plastering, plumbing and interior decoration.

The courses, which include theoretical training and on-the-job monitoring, are currently being implemented in cities across Jordan. They aim to facilitate Syrian workers’ access to legal employment by boosting their skills and accreditation. For Jordanians who do not require work permits, the training upgrades their skills and improves their job prospects.

More than 1,900 have so far completed the training. The first 120 of these will be awarded the certificate, which is accredited by NET and the Jordan Centre of Accreditation and Quality Assurance (CAQA).

The ceremony will be attended by representatives of various development partners, who have been supporting the ILO in implementing activities in response to the Syrian Refugee Crisis in Jordan. The ILO’s activities target both Jordanians and Syrians, through various training and capacity building programmes for both communities. They aim to help integrate Syria refugees in the labour market, in such a way that would fill labour shortfalls, benefit the local communities hosting the refugees and contribute to Jordan’s overall economy.
