Campaign launch to promote Palestinian women’s rights at work

ILO supports trade unions and women’s groups to launch a nation-wide campaign to promote labour rights and improve working conditions for women and girls in the occupied Palestinian territory.

The Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions (PGFTU) and the National Women Employment Committee (NWEC) will launch the campaign “Rights of Palestinian Women at Work” with the support of the International Labour Organization (ILO). The launch will take place at 13:00 p.m. at the PGFTU headquarters in the city of Nablus in the occupied Palestinian territory.

The campaign will work to increase awareness of the rights at work of Palestinian female workers, both adults and girls, and to improve women’s working conditions, especially in relation to discrimination at work.

A guidebook and posters have been developed to accompany the campaign, and provide information on entitlements for working Palestinian women, including wage, leave, social security, and occupational safety and health entitlements. They also provide information on regulations for domestic, seasonal, and young female workers, as well as advice on mechanisms to lodge work-related complaints, and on employer-worker relations.

The campaign preparation process has identified gaps in the current Palestinian Labour Law and its application, and will feed into the Labour Law reform process expected to take place in 2016-2017.
