ILO holds consultative meeting on future employment-intensive projects aimed at assisting Jordan’s Syrian refugee population and their host communities

Members of international agencies and NGOs meet to discuss potential pilot projects, which can benefit both Syrian refugees and vulnerable Jordanians in areas most effected by the Syrian refugee influx.

The ILO will hold a consultative meeting with members of other UN agencies, development partners, as well as local and international NGOs to discuss ideas for potential employment-intensive projects aimed at enhancing job opportunities for Syrian refugees and their Jordanian host communities.

The discussions, which will be led by ILO Geneva-based specialists on employment intensive programmes and crisis response programmes, will assess how the ILO, along with its partners involved in public works, infrastructure and cash-for-work schemes, can implement some pilot projects which can involve Syrian refugees and Jordanians host communities.

Objectives:

  • Establish contacts with international agencies engaged in cash-for work or similar schemes;
  • identify local partners on the ground, including government bodies;
  • guide the selection criteria for infrastructure works; and
  • identify existing ILO materials related to cash-for-work schemes to be adapted for Jordan.

The meeting is part of the ILO’s wider efforts to work with other UN agencies, NGOs and the government on finding solutions for those affected by the Syria crisis in Jordan in terms of employment and livelihood. The ILO is also working with local partners to provide fair and equal support to refugees and host communities in terms of access to skills training and decent work opportunities. The design of a new and larger ILO programme includes, as a component, an employment intensive scheme that will involve small-scale contractors and focus on community level infrastructure works using local-resource-based technology.
