Jordan reviews the implementation of its child labour strategy

Labour ministry officials and the ILO meet to consider legislative and practical measures to improve child labour interventions in Jordan.

The International Labour Organization will meet with officials from Jordan’s Child Labour Unit and inspectors at the Ministry of Labour to review the implementation of the National Framework to Combat Child Labour (NFCL), Jordan’s national child labour strategy, as well as discuss further measures to combat child labour. The meeting will highlight some challenges and practical measures to address NFCL implementation gaps through the Ministry of Labour and other national partners. The ILO will also use the discussion to consider further interventions that provide Jordan with technical support and guidance to effectively combat child labour.

As part of the meeting, participants will discuss suggested amendments to the labour code related to tackling child labour, specifically the current Labour Law (No. 8/ 1996) and its related Interim Act (No. 26/2010). In addition, Jordan’s draft manual on the list of jobs deemed hazardous to children will be reviewed by labour inspectors in order to finalize the document.

The NFCL was adopted by Jordan in 2011 and is being piloted with technical support from the ILO under the International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour project “Moving Towards a Child Labour Free Jordan”. The NFCL coordinates efforts to combat child labour among the Ministries of Labour, Education and Social Development to effectively tackle child labour in Jordan.
