BEIJING(ILO News) - The ILO has collaborated with Wang Baoqiang, an A-lister actor in Chinese movies and TV series, in producing a series of video clips to raise the attention of workers, employers and the society to workplace dust hazards and prevention of pneumoconiosis, which are a group of lung diseases caused by breathing in certain kinds of dust and fibres. When severe, pneumoconiosis often lead to lung impairment, disability, and premature death.

Pneumoconiosis is among the most frequently reported occupational diseases, especially common in developing countries. China, with a large workforce and going through fast industrialization, is faced with more serious challenge of fighting pneumoconiosis than other countries.

For many years, the Chinese government and social partners have battled with this dangerous occupational disease. In 2019, the government adopted a National Action Plan on Prevention and Control of Pneumoconiosis, which put forward strong and detailed measures on prevention of pneumoconiosis and supporting workers who have developed this disease. The ILO, in collaboration with the National Health Commission, has organized capacity building programme on prevention of pneumoconiosis to support key national stakeholders to implement this action plan.

It is essential that workers and employers have adequate knowledge of what is pneumoconiosis and how to prevent it. Everyone can contribute to the spread of the knowledge."

Changhee Lee, Director of the ILO Country Office for China and Mongolia
Though pneumoconiosis is a very serious occupational disease, it is absolutely preventable, if appropriate dust control measures are taken. Workers need to know the health consequence of hazardous dusts exposure and stay away from workplaces where dust exposure level is too high and protection is inadequate. Employers should adopt adequate and effective prevention and protection measures at work to ensure that dust is eliminated or well controlled and the workplace is safe and healthy.

Pneumoconiosis is a very serious occupational disease, but it can be prevented! Employers must ensure safety and health at the work. Workers need to know their legal rights and how to protect their occupational health."

Wang Baoqiang
In China, rural migrant workers are at higher risks of developing pneumoconiosis because of their concentration in mining, construction and other sectors of high risk of dust exposure. Wang Baoqiang, who is famous for playing rural characters on screens, hopes to use his personal influence to help more rural migrant workers understand dusts risks through these video clips.

The videos use simple language in explaining a wide range of knowledge on what pneumoconiosis is, its health consequence, how to prevent it, the responsibilities of employer in adopting protection measures at workplace, and the rights and duties of workers in protecting their health at work. Please join us in disseminating the knowledge. The video clips are also available in the following platforms: weibo, YouTube, etc.
