Programmes and projects

The ILO operates a wide range of programmes and projects in Asia Pacific focusing on relief and development challenges. The overall purpose of this technical cooperation is to support implementation of the Decent Work agenda in each country.

  1. Promoting the Effective Governance of Labour Migration from South Asia through Actions on Labour Market Information, Protection during Recruitment and Employment, Skills and Development Impact

    1 June 2013 - 30 September 2016

    The Project aims to promote the management of labour migration from South Asia, to ensure effective protection of the rights of vulnerable migrant workers, enhance the development impact of labour migration and reduce irregular flows.

  2. Promoting Workers' Rights and Labour Relations in Export Oriented Industries in Bangladesh (FRLR)

    1 June 2013 - 31 December 2015

    The FRLR project aims to promote better compliance with the international labour standards, particularly fundamental principles and rights at work in the ready-made garments, shrimp processing, and shoe and leather sectors. The project has been built on recently intensified works by ILO in Bangladesh in areas of: promotion of labour rights; supporting dialogue between employers, workers and the government; labour compliance; freedom of association, and collective bargaining.

  4. Towards Achieving the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour as Priority (ACHIEVE)

    1 June 2013 - 31 August 2016

    The Project contributes to the elimination of child labour in Nepal, with a priority on its worst forms.

  5. Enhancing the capacity of Pacific Island countries to address the impacts of climate change on migration

    1 June 2013 - 1 June 2015

    Building on its mission to improve the capacity of constituents to protect migrant workers and enhance the management of migration, the ILO, in partnership with ESCAP and UNDP, is working on a project to develop the ability of Pacific Island countries to address the impacts of climate change on migration through well-managed, rights-based migration schemes and policy frameworks, supported by comprehensive research and knowledge building.

  6. Enhancing the Capacity of Pacific Island Countries to Address the Impacts of Climate Change on Migration

    1 June 2013 - 1 June 2016

    The ILO works with partners to provide technical assistance and build the capacity of its constituents to protect migrant workers and manage migration flows effectively. Recently, the ILO, in partnership with ESCAP and UNDP, successfully secured $5 million in EC funding to enhance the capacity of Pacific Island Countries (Nauru, Kiribati, and Tuvalu) to address the impacts of climate change on migration through well-managed, rights based migration schemes and policy frameworks supported by comprehensive knowledge building and knowledge sharing in the Pacific Islands Region.

  7. Extending Social Protection in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province through Building a Social Protection Floor within the Framework of a Social Protection Policy

    1 May 2013 - 30 June 2016

    In partnership with the Japan Social Safety Net Asia and the Pacific (JSSNP), the ILO in Pakistan is working closely with the Government of Khyber Pukhtunkhwa to develop and pilot a Social Protection Floor targeting the 27 million inhabitants of the province, of which 39 per cent live below the poverty datum line and are in need of basic social transfers and social services (health, education, food distribution, shelters, etc.). This will be achieved through Capacity Strengthening initiatives of key policy makers and ILO’s Social Partners, development of a provincial Social Protection Policy guided by Recommendation 202 -concerning National Floors of Social Protection, Analytical Research to generate evidence on existing initiatives related to strategic gaps and implementation issues, and the development of a broader approach to advocacy and awareness on Social Protection.

  8. Typhoon Bopha: Sustainable Livelihoods for Affected Communities

    1 May 2013 - 30 September 2014

    The Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) supported the livelihood recovery initiative of the International Labour Organization (ILO) which applies the Employment Intensive Investment Programme (EIIP) as a post-calamity intervention in the three municipalities of Davao Oriental. Under the EIIP, local organizations were contracted to implement their post-calamity subprojects and activities aimed to help individuals and households recover from the impact of Typhoon Bopha.

  9. ILO-DFID Partnership Programme on Fair Recruitment and Decent Work for Women Migrant Workers in South Asia and the Middle East "Work in Freedom"

    The Work in Freedom is an integrated programme to support mobility by choice among women and girls from destination countries (India, Bangladesh and Nepal) to decent jobs with safety and dignity of workers in destination countries (India, Lebanon and Jordan) through fair recruitment processes.

  10. ILO-DFID Partnership Programme on Fair Recruitment and Decent Work for Women Migrant Workers in South Asia and the Middle East - NEPAL

    20 April 2013 - 31 July 2018

    The Programme, known as “Work in Freedom”, aims to prevent trafficking of women and girls from Bangladesh, India and Nepal as migrant workers in major destination countries (India, Jordan, and Lebanon). It will empower women and girls economically and socially, ensuring decent work conditions and better wages at both origin and destination countries.

  11. Safe Labour Migration Programme in Sri Lanka

    6 April 2013 - 29 February 2020

    Supported by the Government of Switzerland, this programme aims at ensuring an effective implementation of the Sri Lanka National Labour Migration Policy while promoting decent work through good governance, protection and empowerment of migrant workers.

  12. The Tripartite Action to Protect the Rights of Migrant Workers within and from the Greater Mekong Sub-region

    1 April 2013 - 31 December 2015

    The project aims to strengthen the formulation and implementation of recruitment and labour protection policies and practices, to ensure safer migration resulting in decent work. The project engages the tripartite constituents in all of its objectives – strengthening policy and legislation, building capacity of stakeholders and providing services to migrant workers.

  13. Strengthening the Capacities of Tripartite Constituents to Address Labour Issues in the Framework of the Better Work Viet Nam Programme

    1 April 2013 - 30 June 2015

    Better Work Viet Nam's overall development objective is to contribute to improving the lives of thousands of workers and their families and to increase the competitiveness of the Vietnamese garment industry

  14. Strengthening the role of Disabled People's Organisations to advance disability rights in Vietnam

    1 April 2013 - 31 December 2015

    The project aim to strengthen the capacities and role of Disabled People's Organizations in order to promote the rights of Persons with Disabilities.

  15. Developing a social safety net: capacity building for income support and livelihood recovery for poor and vulnerable families affected by Typhoon Pablo through labour-based rural road repair and maintenance

  16. Bangladesh Skills for Employment and Productivity (B-SEP)

    27 March 2013 - 30 June 2019

    The Bangladesh Skills for Employment and Productivity (B-SEP) Project is an initiative of the Government of Bangladesh (GoB) funded by the Government of Canada and executed by the International Labor Organization with support from the GoB. The project aims to accelerate the current efforts being undertaken by other organizations, donors and government to make skills in Bangladesh nationally recognized, accessible to all, higher quality and directly linked to jobs.

  17. Work in Freedom

    1 March 2013 - 30 April 2018

    The Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment (MEWOE), The Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), Bangladesh Employers’ Federation (BEF), National Coordination Council for Workers’ Education (NCCWE) and Association of Recruiting Agents, other government ministries, departments, national and international NGOs and International trade unions as appropriate for achieving the project outputs.

  18. Studies on Afghan Competitiveness for Job Creation - Agricultural Value Chains

    1 February 2013 - 30 September 2015

    The project aims to help the Afghan Government identify competitive agricultural sectors for priority development.

  19. Global Action Programme on Migrant Domestic Workers and their Families

    1 February 2013 - 31 January 2016

    The programme focuses on promoting the decent work for migrant workers worldwide.

  20. Programme for Local Economic Development through Enhanced Governance and Grassroots Empowerment (PLEDGE)

    16 January 2013 - 31 October 2016

    Through the PLEDGE Programme, the International Labour Organization (ILO) aimed to contribute to confidence and peace building efforts through local economic development and sustainable livelihood creation in conflict affected areas in Mindanao. This was done through the strengthening of organizational capacities, specifically the Bangsamoro Development Agency (BDA), to implement community-based enterprises and supply chains to create more employment opportunities for disadvantaged groups in the communities.
