    ILO statement on reform of Bangladesh labour law

    Amendments to the Bangladesh labour Act 2006 were adopted on 15 July 2013. Its conformity with international labour standards ratified by Bangladesh will be reviewed by the ILO supervisory machinery later in the year.

    Solar home systems: Lighting the way to a greener world of work in Bangladesh

    While the national grid reaches many areas of Bangladesh, most of the country’s 142 million inhabitants live in rural areas and 70 per cent of them are not connected. Most rely on kerosene fuelled lamps for lighting and petrol or diesel-fired generators for other power needs. Solar power is increasingly seen as a convenient, affordable and environmentally friendly alternative for many in Bangladesh.

    Addressing at the launching ceremony, Mr Gyorgy Sziraczki, ILO Viet Nam Country Director, said "for every State and their people, social protection is not just a question of entitlement and responsibility, but a matter of rights. It is a social contract with people. Countries do not need to wait to become wealthy before they make a commitment to social protection. Rather, they should start improving social protection today, as a means to achieve broad-based, sustainable growth, and greater prosperity and human security.

    ILO Viet Nam Director's Speech on the World Day Against Child Labour

    Addressing at the event, Mr Gyorgy Sziraczki, ILO Viet Nam Country Director, said "This year’s World Day Against Child Labour puts the spotlight on child domestic work. The ILO estimates that globally 15.5 million children are engaged in paid or unpaid domestic work in the home of a third party or employer. The vast majority of them are girls while more than half are found in hazardous child domestic work".

As the old Vietnamese saying goes "One tree cannot make a hill; three trees together can make a high mountain". The participation of central and local level tripartite partners -- Government, workers’ and employers’ organizations -- is key to success.
