Lao People’s Democratic Republic national job fair attracts thousands

The Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare with support from the ILO China South-South Cooperation Project organizes the inaugural National Job Fair in Vientiane on 5-6 June 2015.

Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare (MoLSW) organized the National Job Fair in Vientiane at the National Convention Centre on 5-6 June 2015.

With support from the People’s Republic of China through the ILO’s technical cooperation project referred to as the ILO/China South-South Cooperation Project to Expand Employment Services and Enhance Labour Market Information in Cambodia and Lao PDR, the Job Fair aimed to improve la-bour market efficiency and participation, reducing unemployment and enhancing links and infor-mation flows between job seekers and employers.

H.E. Mr Thongsing Thammavong, the Prime Minister, presided over the inaugural session, a ges-ture reinforcing the importance the government places on employment promotion. The inaugural session was also presided over by H.E. Ms Onechanh Thammavong, Minister of Labour and Social Welfare and H.E. Ms Baykham Khattiya, Vice Minister of Labour and Social Welfare. The ILO was represented by Ms Carmela I. Torres, Senior Specialist on Skills & Employability and notes that the Job Fair is an integral part of the various public employment services mechanisms implemented by MoLSW in supporting a job-rich and inclusive growth. And H.E. Ms Thammavong said that such a National Job Fair, supported by the People’s Republic of Chi-na, is essential for Lao to achieve and sustain eco-nomic growth, and trans-lating that growth into the creation of more and better jobs, leading to poverty reduction.
